Inhalt
The right to freedom of speech is guaranteed by most constitutions as one of the cornerstones of democracy. Speech is primarily awarded the function of political empowerment within liberal political thought. On the other hand, there are ongoing debates whether hate speech, such as antisemitism, sexism, racism, homophobia, transphobia or ableism, which aims at degrading and slandering certain individuals or groups of people, should be proscribed? While some reject state censorship, others advocate that the state is responsible for protecting historically discriminated individuals and groups from injurious speech acts. In this class on language, power and violence, we will engage with the question if and when certain forms of hate speech should be criminalized and when free speech should be protected.
