General information for the course
The study of Catholic Theology comprises the scientific analysis of sources and content of the Christian faith and practice. The course covers the Christian expression of the language of God throughout history to the present day, the role of religion in social and political discourse, and the question of how to deal with life’s challenges and the search for meaning. Thus, the study of theology brings into focus the history of life as well as contemporary issues of regional and global coexistence. Four disciplines are represented at the Institute of Catholic Theology: Biblical theology, church history, systematic theology and practical theology / religious education. Small work groups, excellent individual support, and constructive interaction are the hallmarks of the institute, enabling students to receive personal support during their studies. Seminars and lectures both involve class discussions and are supplemented by practical components essential to the program, such as excursions and explorations in Germany and abroad.
Catholic Theology can be studied as a 1st or 2nd major in the Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences degree program.
Study contents
In the study of Catholic Theology, the content of the Christian faith is critically analyzed with the goal of understanding its role as a major factor shaping culture and society, and of introducing it into academic discussion as well as the broader interreligious and social context.
Students of Catholic Theology delve into questions of God and the meaning of religion in a societal, political, historical and everyday context. Students will study biblical theology (Old and New Testaments), the history of Christianity and its theology (ancient, medieval, modern, and contemporary church history), systematic theology (fundamental theology, dogmatics, ethics), and practical theology / religious education (religious socialization and development, fundamentals of Christian ecclesiastical practice).
In addition to the regular theological curriculum, the Institute of Catholic Theology pursues a wide range of research and teaching interests, for example in the areas of theology & sustainability, theology of creation and animals, theological gender studies, constructs of otherness and identity, life and faith in the Middle Ages, “one Christianity – many churches?,” intercultural learning, pastoral care in schools and the didactics of theology.
The Institute is also engaged in a lively dialogue with partner universities and institutions. ERASMUS partnerships offer theology students the opportunity to study abroad for one semester or one year (e.g. in Graz, Austria; Prague, Czechia; Leuven, Belgium; or Warsaw, Poland) and to expand their horizons in relation to the diversity of theology and the church.
