General information for the course
Interdisciplinary Catholic Theology can be studied in the Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences degree program in combination with the 1st major in Catholic Theology. It offers both an interdisciplinary overview and knowledge of the interaction between the theological subjects represented, such as the exegetical, historical, systematic and practical disciplines in relation to each other, as well as in dialogue with other disciplines. The discipline-specific contribution of Catholic theology to social, political, and cultural discourses is considered in a close interweaving of theory and practice.
Interdisciplinary Catholic Theology can be studied as a 2nd major in the Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences degree program. It can only be chosen in combination with a 1st major in Catholic Theology.
Study contents
At its core, theology is an interdisciplinary subject that critically analyzes religion and the church from a variety of perspectives. Systematic, historical, literary and linguistic, as well as exegetical, legal and practical perspectives offer a wide range of approaches to issues that are relevant to our time and shape our society. In the secular context of Dresden, theology expands the cultural memory of other sciences in an appropriate way and introduces critical elements against tendencies of cultural and intellectual forgetfulness into the scientific and societal discourse. In disciplinary and interdisciplinary modules, theology reveals itself as a science that incorporates different forms of thought and promotes discourse in complex structures.
The subject of Interdisciplinary Catholic Theology as part of the BA in Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences at the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Science of TU Dresden teaches the fundamental principles of theology as well as additional subject-specific skills that are indispensable for interdisciplinary dialogue and the ability to engage in discourse, especially in a secular context. In this sense, it offers a more in-depth study of Catholic theology in combination with a six-month professional internship or with one of the supplementary areas of Protestant theology, social sciences, or biology.
