General information for the course
One of the main focuses of Slavic Studies in Dresden – in addition to learning Slavic languages (Russian, Czech, Polish, Sorbian) – is the linguistic analysis of these languages.
The program comprises fundamentals, methods and subject matters of Slavic linguistics, literature, and cultural studies as well as of intercultural communication, and it conveys knowledge about the key topics of Slavic research in history and at present. During their studies, students acquire application-oriented, methodical and communicative skills, which are a prerequisite for analyzing, reflecting on, and explaining characteristics, mechanisms and structures specific to language, text, culture and society.
The Institute of Slavic Studies cooperates with a large number of universities and research facilities and enables students to gain an insight into research at Slavic partner institutions.
Slavic Studies can be studied as a 2nd major in the Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences degree program.
Study contents
In the 2nd major subject of Slavic Studies, students acquire – in addition to a secure command of a Slavic language (Polish, Russian or Czech) – an overview of the language, literature and culture of the country on the basis of academic methods over the course of their studies. This overview covers the period from medieval beginnings to the present. In addition, they acquire practical language skills, which they then consolidate and expand at university level.
Students acquire broad, fundamental knowledge and specialize in a specific area. They acquire analytical, methodological and communicative skills and learn to analyze, reflect on, explain and teach characteristics, mechanisms and structures specific to language, text, culture and society.
