Admission requirements
Requirements to be admitted to the Master’s degree program:
• Candidates must have completed a first vocational university degree recognized in Germany or a qualification from an officially recognized vocational academy in the field of mathematics or a closely related program of study, in particular in technomathematics or mathematics in business and economics. An Admissions Committee will be set up to decide on questions of doubt regarding the assessment of study programs.
• Proficiency in English at B2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. More on proof of language skills
Proof must be provided in the form of a certificate for general university entrance qualification, a certificate for subject-specific university entrance qualification comprising English as a foreign language, a certificate for university entrance qualification from a program completed in English, a certificate of a university degree program completed in English or the result of an internationally recognized language test, e.g. TOEFL (72), IELTS (5.5), UNIcert II.
Notes on the application process
If, at the time of application, proof of the first degree qualifying the applicant for a profession is not yet available, the application will be considered under the precondition that 80% of the credit points attainable for the degree have already been achieved based on completed module examinations or the final thesis and the colloquium (if applicable). A certification from the awarding institute of higher education (examination office) serves as proof of the above-mentioned academic achievements. General information about the degree program
Applied mathematics is a key skill in industrial research and development. As the language of science, it is closely linked with technological developments such as energy-efficient design, machine learning, secure communication and medical diagnostics. The design of energy-efficient motors and circuits, the construction of sturdy bridges and lighter airplanes, the secure transmission of information and modern medical diagnostics would not be possible without mathematical models or their analysis and solutions.
As such, the career options open to our graduates are multifaceted and abundant. The Master’s degree program in Technomathematics is application-oriented and aims to provide students with sound skills, scholarly flexibility and creativity as well as a readiness to work together with others. Special emphasis is placed on modeling skills (especially with partial differential equations) and the adapted numerical treatment of these models. A technical or scientific minor supports students in applying the knowledge gained during this degree program.
Students can begin their studies either in the winter semester or in the summer semester. This Master’s degree program can also be completed as a part-time program.
Study contents
The program is organized in modules. The curriculum is divided into three semesters. Students write their Master’s thesis in their fourth semester.
Modules on analysis and numerical treatment of partial differential equations are mandatory in the first semester of the Technomathematics Master’s degree program. A modeling seminar and research project foster skills in application-oriented modeling. Moreover, students must also select an elective compulsory field comprising 42 ECTS points with mathematical content from the areas of analysis, algebra, differential equations, discrete mathematics, financial mathematics and mathematics in business and economics, geometry, numerical mathematics, modeling and simulation, optimization or stochastics. This is supplemented by a non-mathematical minor subject (comprising 24 ECTS points) in electrical engineering, computer science, mechanical engineering or physics. Depending on which minor subject they chose during their Bachelor’s studies, students of this Master’s degree program can either deepen their knowledge of the same minor subject or embark on a new minor with fundamental content. The Scientific Literature – Research Topics module is intended to support them during the writing process. A vocational internship (or two) totaling up to eight weeks can also be completed and credited to the elective compulsory field.
Students can study abroad for a semester, in particular at partner universities in the European Consortium for Mathematics in Industry.

Occupational fields
After completing this Master’s degree program in Technomathematics, graduates are qualified for a broad spectrum of occupational fields in economics, technology and science. In addition to IT, corporate consulting, insurance and banking, mathematicians are also in high demand in industrial research and development, biotechnology, and management thanks to their abstractive abilities.
