History
TU Dresden has a long-standing tradition in teaching and research. It was founded in 1828 as the Technische Bildungsanstalt (Technical Institute) in Dresden. Even as far back as this, the institute was able to attract outstanding teachers, such as Johann Andreas Schubert, the builder of the first operational German steam locomotive “Saxonia”. Today, a university building on Zellscher Weg is named after him - as is the tradition at TU Dresden that buildings bear the names of outstanding individuals from the field of research. In 1890, the Bildungsanstalt, which by that time had already developed into a polytechnic institute, advanced to become the Königlich Sächsische Technische Hochschule (Royal Saxon Polytechnic Institute). In 1961, it achieved the status of a university. With the German reunification, TU Dresden underwent rapid development from 1990 onwards. Among other things, three previously independent institutions were integrated and the faculties were founded. Today, TU Dresden is one of eleven Universities of Excellence in Germany and occupies a leading position in teaching and research.

Academic Heritage collections on the history of the university
The Academic Heritage of TU Dresden is responsible for over forty university collections, including a collection on the history of the university. This collection includes individual pieces and small collections of objects that the Academic Heritage has amassed as historical witnesses to the history of the university. These include, for example, the historical chains that were worn by Rectors in the past, selected pieces of furniture or scientific equipment and instruments with a special history, as well as memorabilia from the inheritances of various lecturers.
