University and habitus: How does origin shape my academic career path?
Being the first person in the family to go to university, do a doctorate and take the next steps - a path with many facets, special challenges and questions. Parents are often unable to provide much support because they know little or nothing about the academic world.
Social background plays an important role in the German higher education system and also has an influence on the decision in favour of or against a doctorate. Added to this are family expectations, lack of experience and role models. Often, however, we are not even aware of these connections and relationships, but rather they have a hidden and unconscious effect.
- What strengths do I have and what do they have to do with my background?
- Which habitus do I bring with me and which one is desired at the university?
- And: which unwritten rules do I encounter again and again?
We work together on biographical patterns, become aware of our strengths and discuss privileges. The workshop works out the resources that first-time academics bring with them and can use for their path in academia. It offers the opportunity to reflect on the effects of one's own educational background and to exchange ideas with other early career researchers.
