Foundations of Accounting: Anja Rogas (#AR1)
Brief Description
During the 2021/22 winter semester, this course was the first to use graphic novel-based independent study e-tutorials to teach the foundations of accounting. The students were able to repeat or consolidate selected content via the tutorials and independently review their knowledge using self-assessments.

What makes this gem special?
The special thing about our gem is that the information is not shared via long texts or videos, but rather in comic format. The students assume the perspective of Fritz Fröhlich. Just like the students in the course, the fictional Fritz has just begun his studies at TUD and is also enrolled in the Foundations of Accounting course. He also works a side job as a student assistant in accounting at the company Loberd Süßwaren GmbH. The graphic novel tells the story of Fritz and his daily life, including regular bits of information about various topics in accounting, presented in a variety of ways. For instance, Fritz learns about balance sheets in a lecture and meets fellow student Emma in the SLUB to talk about equity accounts. In addition to specialized education in accounting, students also received insights into approaches for acquiring information, thus also training their methodological expertise. Using self-assessments whose tasks are integrated in the story of the graphic novel, the students were able to independently test their knowledge and see where there were gaps to fill in.
The tutorials were developed with great attention to detail based on academic findings on multimedia learning. Despite accounting’s reputation as a generally drier subject, the e-tutorials with Fritz’s story make this course worthy of gem status.
