ESCAPE ROOM
The Educational Escape Room at the ZLSB
Objective
Since 2021, an Educational Escape Room has been developed and trialed at the ZLSB together with student teachers in line with the gamification approach. Based on the 17 Goals for Sustainable Development, the Escape Room addresses the topic of migration and flight.
The players embody employees of a federal office who are required to reconstruct important personal files that have been damaged in 60 minutes. The aim is to sensitize players to various reasons for flight and to work through specific refugee biographies.
The Escape Room forms the basis for reflective, interdisciplinary further work on current topics such as educational inequality, climate change, gender and diversity, etc.
Within the Escape Room web-based digital platforms are used as well as tools available in the room to connect real and digital spaces. These include the digital board and iPads as operable devices, virtual reality glasses that can be used to view 360° images, Anybook Readers for acoustic playback of instructions, etc., as well as QR codes and other elements.
Scenarios for use
Playing the Escape Room with students or pupils (8th to 12th grade) followed by a reflection dialogue.
Future plans
We are currently planning a joint project with various (educational) stakeholders to jointly design a free digital platform for reflective further work on the topic of "sexual orientation" in school lessons. Further information will follow.
Further information
In 2023, we were delighted to receive an award for the seminar "Escape from your classroom! Thinking Inclusion and Digitalization together" named "Award for Outstanding Digital Teaching in Saxon Teacher Training" by the PraxisdigitaliS joint project. The prize money will be used to further develop the Escape Room.
The Escape Room is located at 3 Ludwig-Ermold-Street, 01217 Dresden.
Trigger Warning
The Escape Room is about migration, persecution and flight. This is the reality of life for many people around the world and is caused by various factors. The Escape Room addresses the climate crisis, unequal educational opportunities and poverty, persecution based on sexual orientation, political persecution and religious affiliation.
The plots and all personal biographies described in the escape room are fictitious. The room is dark and cramped in places.
