German-French Day 2020
Young Dresdeners commemorate the Shoah on Franco-German Day
The Centrum Frankreich | Frankophonie of TU Dresden, the Goethe-Institut Dresden, the Sächsische Landeszentrale für politische Bildung and the Institut français Dresden organized a joint evening at the Goethe-Institut Dresden on January 21, 2020 as part of the Franco-German Day.
This year's theme of the day was "Germany and France: Together against anti-Semitism and racism ", as announced by the Federal Republic of Germany's Plenipotentiary for Franco-German Cultural Relations, Mr. Armin Laschet.
Every year, Franco-German Day commemorates the signing of the Elysée Treaty on Franco-German cooperation on 22 January 1963 and aims to familiarize young people from both countries with their respective neighbouring countries, their history and their cultural wealth.
The evening was dedicated to the Polish-French writer Anna Langfus (1920-1966) . She was one of the first women among the Jewish survivors of the Shoah to write about her experiences of persecution, murder and survival. In 1962, she was awarded the Prix Goncourt for her work.
In the first part of the evening, pupils from the Marie-Curie-Gymnasium and students from TU Dresden read excerpts from Anna Langfus' novel Salz und Schwefel / Le sel et le soufre (1964) in German and French.
Afterwards, literary scholar Dr. Aurélia Kalisky (Leibniz Centre for Literary and Cultural Research Berlin) discussed the author's work and the literature of the Shoah with the audience.
