Reading Gary Victor
Gary Victor, born in 1958 in Port-au-Prince, is one of the most popular contemporary Haitian authors. In addition to novels, short stories and plays, he also writes for radio and television, which regularly cause a stir in Haiti. He became known in German-speaking countries for his crime novels Schweinezeiten and Soro, both of which were placed on the ZEIT best list of crime novels and the Litprom best list of world receivers. His drastic depictions of social ills place him in the tradition of 19th century social novels and make him Haiti's most subversive contemporary writer. He has been awarded several prizes, including the Prix RFO.
"Booze and Atonement" by Gary Victor was published on March 10, 2017.
Dieuswalwe Azémar, the Dirty Harry of Port-au-Prince, now also has a German-speaking fan base thanks to "Schweinezeiten" (litradukt, 2013) and "Soro" (litradukt 2015): both novels were on the ZEIT best list of crime novels and the Litprom best list "Weltempfänger". In "Suff and Atonement", Azémar experiences his most difficult ordeal to date: a rehab treatment ...
