The course of study is divided into a basic study period of three semesters and a main study period of seven semesters including a research oriented project thesis and diploma thesis.
During the first three semesters, basic units in engineering in the following areas will be taught:
- building design,
- building physics,
- mathematics and computing in construction,
- mechanics and strength of materials,
- construction materials,
- geodesy,
- projective geometry,
- environmental protection within civil engineering,
- experimental physics and
- building chemistry.
The following four semesters include courses in:
- mathematics and computing in construction,
- structural analysis,
- reinforced concrete construction and building with prestressed concrete,

- urban and road construction (urban and traffic planning, railway construction, municipal engineering),
- construction site management and water engineering (e.g., community water resources).
The TU Dresden does also offer a 6-year "Civil Engineering" Bachelor programme, which is only available through distance learning. Students are thus offered the chance to combine profession and education.
Furthermore, students are able to individually adjust the order of the programme according to their previous knowledge. There is a tuition fee.
