General information for the course
Classical Philology focuses on the classical languages, Greek and Latin. Students analyze the linguistic presentation and content of captivating world literature texts (histories, drama, epics, elegies, philosophical and rhetoric literature, novels, satires, etc.) while didactic and methodological approaches foster their abilities to decode, interpret and recode.
Apart from the enjoyment of reading these texts, students’ command and comprehension of German is considerably augmented. The same holds true for Romance languages in particular, but also for English and other languages. Furthermore, a historical-cultural perspective rooted in language reveals new insights into the spatial and historical importance of Europe.
Classical Philology can be studied as a 2nd major in the Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences degree program.
Study contents
Students will develop an overview of the historical development of Latin and Greek language and literature as well as other areas of classical culture. At the same time, they will learn the theoretical and methodological foundations of the subject and acquire the ability to apply the linguistic, literary and culture-based approaches of the discipline. They will also be able to formulate their own questions according to scholarly principles and to work on them independently.
Students will acquire analytical, methodological and communicative skills and learn to analyze and reflect on facts, mechanisms and structures specific to language, text and culture.
