General information for the course
The Architectural Science degree program conducted at the Faculty of Architecture is geared towards students with a 1st major in Art History who aspire to specialize in the field of architecture, landscape architecture, and the preservation of historical monuments. Students will acquire the fundamental knowledge and skills required for the professional analysis of works of architecture and landscape architecture, taking selected functional, architectural, design-related, social, constructive, historical and ecological aspects into account. Students will be able to analyze specialist topics and problem areas in a scientifically correct manner, to formulate theses and to find possible solutions.
Architectural Science can also be studied as a 2nd major in the Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences degree program. It can only be chosen in combination with a 1st major in Art History.
Study contents
Architectural Science covers the essential foundations and skills needed for a professional analysis and the handling of architecture and landscape architecture. This degree program is divided into modules and comprises a compulsory field and an elective compulsory field.
The modules of the compulsory field provide knowledge of vocabulary and typology, materials and construction, history and theory as well as the preservation of historical monuments including its exemplary application for the analysis and evaluation of individual structures as well as architectural ideas and designs. Moreover, students gain insight into architectural professions.
The elective compulsory field is intended to consolidate studies in line with the student's own skills and interests. It covers topics such as preserving historical gardens as well as the basic skills in representing, designing and drafting architecture. Students additionally have the opportunity to engage in an in-depth scientific examination of questions concerning architectural history and theory.
