Notes on the application process
If, at the time of application, proof of the first degree qualifying the applicant for a profession is not yet available, the application will be considered under the precondition that 80% of the credit points attainable for the degree have already been achieved based on completed module examinations or the final thesis and the colloquium (if applicable). A certification from the awarding institute of higher education (examination office) serves as proof of the above-mentioned academic achievements. You can find the appropriate form on the Admissions Office website.
General information about the degree program
This Master’s degree program imparts a deeper understanding of the intrinsic cultural value of history and the historical dimensions of the present. It enables students to review and develop subject-specific schools of thought by critically examining sources and research. The framework for the degree program, as well as for individual specializations and/or the broadest possible program of study, is provided by a well-networked, international and interdisciplinary scientific and research landscape in Dresden. This also offers excellent conditions for financial support for doctoral or postdoc studies and a wide range of opportunities for starting a career.
Study contents
This modular course of study primarily comprises three semesters. The third semester is principally used for focus courses and is therefore suited to a semester abroad. The Master’s thesis is written in the fourth semester.
Students receive 120 credit points (ECTS) upon successful completion of the program (six modules plus the Master’s thesis). The program comprises two main types of courses, namely the core courses (90/105 credit points (ECTS) including the Master’s thesis and colloquium) and the interdisciplinary focus courses (30/15 credit points (ECTS)).
As a rule, the program comprises four compulsory core courses. In the introductory module, students consolidate their knowledge by working on theoretical guiding and key texts of the subject and test this knowledge on research-relevant topics. The three concentration modules give students the opportunity to set clear study goals according to their interests, which can be distinguished in terms of epoch (in ancient, medieval, early-modern, modern, or contemporary history) or systematically (in regional and national history, economic and social history or the history of technology).
In the focus courses, students can choose between
— Studying abroad
— An internship
— Interdisciplinary studies
or combine the internship with interdisciplinary studies.

Occupational fields
The Master’s degree program in History prepares students for occupational fields and activities for which a research-oriented approach to history and its communication are essential. The possibility of an in-depth specialization is the prerequisite for acquiring specific competencies in science and research, which can be expanded in a subsequent doctoral program.
Furthermore, it opens up access to the broad field of history in non-academic teaching and (further) education, documentation, journalism, etc. In addition, the skills acquired in the Master’s degree program in research, writing and presentation provide access to occupational fields that are characterized by tasks in the areas of knowledge transfer, organization and management. In the broadest sense, the Master’s degree program qualifies students for all occupational fields in which an independent analysis of complex social facts and problems is required.
Graduates of the program offer insights into the diversity of occupational fields on the website of the Institute of History.
