LCWiss – Longitudinal Curriculum for Academic Skills in Science on OPAL: Dr. Lydia Günther (#LG1)
Brief Description
Acquiring academic skills is a crucial objective of higher education! Our innovative OPAL course supports this goal by offering students at the Faculty of Medicine the opportunity to learn about the foundations of scientific work at any time and at their own pace as well as to inform themselves about doctoral studies with the help of interviews.
Keywords
- Academic work
- Doctoral studies
- Good scientific practice
What makes this gem special?
This innovative, informative and low-threshold OPAL course allows students to learn about the foundations of scientific work and doctoral studies in the field of medicine at their own pace.
In the three foundation modules, annotated slides and additional materials are used primarily to teach various content. Students can test their knowledge themselves using the test modules.
The doctoral studies module pools information and provides orientation for students who aspire to doctoral studies, presenting the intensive optional analysis of a scientific question. To this end, interviews were held with numerous supervisors and doctoral students.
This course is special because it can be used in a wide variety of ways (e.g. as part of various flipped classroom approaches) and because of its reach. Everyone studying Human Medicine, Dentistry and Midwifery was enrolled in the course, which totals to around 1,700 students. When classes were canceled due to the pandemic, this course could also be used as a substitute as well as to support the completion or partial completion of elective assignments.
The involvement of Human Medicine students in the planning and creation of this course deserves special mention – they helped ensure the course meets the needs of students! New content is continually added to the course and responses via the feedback module enable the further development of student-oriented content.
We hope that with this course, we can get students from our Faculty excited about scientific work, arouse their interest in scientific research and also offer some concrete help (e.g. for data visualization or data documentation) when it comes to academic work!
