In his new novel, Goncourt Prize winner Mathias Énard takes up his major theme: Violence and links the present and history in two narrative strands.

On the eve of September 11, 2001, an academic party meets on a Havel steamer to honor the great mathematician and poet Paul Heudeber, who was invented by Énard. He survived Buchenwald concentration camp and opted for the GDR after the war, while the love of his life went to the West. The second strand of the novel tells the story of a deserter in a nameless war who seeks refuge in a mountain hut.

Mathias Énard, born in Niort (western France) in 1972, now lives in Barcelona, where he teaches Arabic at the Autonomous University of Barcelona, following long stays in the Middle East. His novels, including "Zone" (2008) and "Compass" (2015), have won numerous awards.
