Non-recognition of the semester towards the standard period of study
Table of contents
1. Non-recognition of a semester due to reasons for which you are not responsible
According to § 10 para 2 no. 2 Enrolment Regulations of TU Dresden, periods of study, in which deadlines were exceeded but the student was not personally responsible, are not counted towards the standard period of study. Prerequisites for application generally include
- A demonstrable reason for which the student was not responsible and which hindered the students’ studies for an entire semester, so that no or no more than one graded piece of work could be submitted (for example: illnesses that cause an inability to study),
- The reason for exceeding the deadline not being permanent (for example: Chronic illnesses),
- The fact that no leave of absence for the semester had been applied for and
- the fact that the semester, in which a degree programme was not possible for reasons for which the student was not responsible, had already been completed at the time of application (March 31 or September 30)
If necessary, an application can be submitted at any time during the entire subsequent study program after the end of the semester in question.
1. Deadline for the application
The application can be submitted at the end of the semester, in which the deadline was exceeded, at the earliest. The last possibility to retroactively apply for non-recognition of semesters is the last semester of enrolment. After de-registration, it is no longer possible to submit an application.
2. Responsibility
The application should be submitted to the Admission Office or the International Office.
3. Content of the application
There is no form for the application. The application must therefore be self-written and include the following:
- Complete contact details of the student
- Degree program and enrolment number
- Date
- Indication of the specific semester in which the deadlines were exceeded
- Detailed explanation of the reason (e.g. Illness, parental leave) for which the deadline was exceeded or the student was unable to attend the program
- Signature
4. Documents/Evidence to be attached
- A complete overview of all submitted graded work, including date of completion (e.g. Printout of an overview of grades via the self-service function on the website). The overview must show that none or at most one graded piece of work was completed during the semester in question. If necessary, a confirmation from the Examination Office can be requested. Please note that you cannot apply for non-recognition of an entire semester if you have submitted more than one graded piece of work in the semester in question. In these cases, you can alternatively apply for an extension of the examination period at the responsible examination board in accordance with § 20 para. 5 Act on the Autonomy of Institutions of Higher Education in the Free State of Saxony (SächsHSFG). The reasons must also be documented there.
- Suitable evidence as proof of the reasons for the application
(e.g. A medical certificate proving the temporary inability to study for health reasons during the period applied for or
birth of one’s own child). Please note that permanent chronic illnesses or other long-term reasons for not being able to study do not lead to non-recognition of semesters. This does not apply to periods at the beginning of a chronic illness, during which the clinical procedure and type of treatment must first be determined. This would then have to be stated in a medical certificate.
If the application is approved, the semester, in which a deadline was missed with good reason, will not count towards the standard period of study, i.e. the semester count will be reset. Students will receive a notification and a modified certificate of enrolment, which can be found in the Selma portal in the menu under [Documents|Notifications|Certificates].
2. Non-recognition of a semester due to involvement in an election
According to § 10 para 2 nos. 4 and 5 of the Enrolment Regulations of TU Dresden, the following applies:
“(2) The following will not count towards the standard period of study:
4. of one semester if students have served at least one term in an elected or appointed position in the bodies of TUD Dresden University of Technology, the Student Body, the Studentenwerk (Student Services Organization), or the Academic Affairs Committee, or as an Equal Opportunities Officer or Representative for Students with Disabilities or Chronic Illnesses (committee time).
5. of one additional semester for each additional election or appointment period in accordance with number 4, up to a maximum of three semesters."
Prerequisites for application generally include
- Provable participation in an election in one of the aforementioned committees and
- No leave of absence from your studies during the semesters, in which you participated in one of the committees.
If necessary, an application can be submitted at any time during the entire subsequent study program after the end of the semester in question. This is usually done by submitting a written application to the Admissions Office or the International Office. A confirmation of committee activity from the responsible body should be enclosed. If the application is approved, one or max. 3 semesters will not count towards the standard period of study, i.e. the semester count will be reset. Students will receive a notification and a modified certificate of enrolment, which can be found in the Selma portal in the menu under [Documents|Notifications|Certificates].
3. Extension of the standard period of study pursuant to § 5 Teacher Training Examination Regulations (LAPO) for teacher training students
If a qualification in Latin, Greek or Hebrew required for Teacher Training for Secondary or Vocational Schools in accordance with § 5 LAPO is not proven by the certificate of general university entrance qualification (Abitur), the standard period of study is extended by one semester after completion of a corresponding language course. For this purpose, please submit an application to the Admissions Office.
