Excellence: Guiding Principle of University Development

The TU Dresden is one of eleven German Universities of Excellence since June 2012. This distinction confirms the potential of one of Germany's largest technical universities. But it is also an incentive and a guiding principle to stay and become even more "excellent".

For this reason, TU Dresden is also participating in the follow-up programme of the Excellence Initiative - the "Excellence Strategy of the Federal and State Governments".

Exzellence Initiative and Exzellence Strategy at TU Dresden

As part of the 2nd phase (2012-2017) of the Excellence Initiative Programme, the TUD was successful with its entire application package. It consisted of:

1. Graduate School
Dresden International Graduate School for Biomedicine and Bioengineering (DIGS-BB)

2. Clusters of Excellence
Center for Advancing Electronics Dresden (cfaed)
Center for Regenerative Therapies Dresden (CRTD)

3. Institutional Strategy
"The Synergetic University"

The Excellence Initiative ended on 31 October 2017. From 1 November 2019 onwards, it will be succeeded by the Excellence Strategy of the Federal and State Governments ("ExStra"), which will run for an indefinite period and comprises the funding lines "Clusters of Excellence" and "Universities of Excellence".

Currently funded Excellence Institutions (Clusters, Graduate Schools and Institutional Strategies) will receive bridge funding or completion funding during the phase between 1 November 2017 and 31 October 2019.

The condition for funding as a University of Excellence through “ExStra” is the approval of at least two Clusters of Excellence. On 27 September 2018, the German Research Foundation (Deutsche Forschungsmeienschaft, DFG) announced that three out of six proposed TUD Clusters of Excellence have been approved. Hence, TUD is still in the race for the title "University of Excellence". Its University of Excellence proposal has been submitted on 10 December 2018.

The final decision on the new "Universites of Excellence" will be made on 19 July 2019.
