User Certificates (Advanced Electronic Signature)
General
A certificate, in this case a user certificate, is a digital identity that has been authenticated by a trusted authority. A user certificate consists of a public and a private key. The private key belongs exclusively to the owner of the user certificate, is secret and may not be passed on to third parties under any circumstances. The private key must be protected by a password that is as complex as possible. The public key, on the other hand, should be distributed as widely as possible, since other people can use this key to send you encrypted e-mails, for example. The PKI ensures that your public key is actually yours by signing it and making it accessible to everyone in the central directory service of the TU Dresden CA.
A user certificate within the framework of the TU Dresden CA corresponds to an advanced electronic signature according to SigG.
Use cases for advanced electronic signatures include:
Digital signature of e-mails (with your private key)Encryption of e-mails (with the public key of the communication partner)Authentication against systems/servers (access security via user certificate)Encryption of file systemsParticipation in ShibbolethDigital signature of
