Change of course/subject within TU Dresden
A change of degree program is when
- the degree program,
- a subject (e.g. in teacher training and the Linguistics, Literature and Cultural Studies) or
- the envisaged degree (e.g. from Bachelor's to Master's)
is changed. This also affects students who have graduated from a degree program and would like to follow it up with a second (e.g. Master's).
The general application periods for degree programs with open admission and courses with restricted admission (numerus clausus) apply to changes of degree program or subject. It should be noted that alternate application periods for participation in aptitude tests apply in some courses. Please find these periods in the degree program information in our study information system.
Prospective students who are not yet enrolled at TU Dresden must first visit our application page and respond to the questions in under "Finding your application portal." This will lead you to the right one.
Students who are already enrolled at TU Dresden can apply for a change of degree program/subject via the selma student portal. To do this, please select [Application]. In the future, you will find all the changes of degree program or subject for which you have applied under [Current Applications].
At the end of the online application, every applicant receives a printout of information regarding which documents have to be submitted for which degree program. Applicants who are applying for a change of course to a higher semester must apply for a certificate of credited semesters (>certificate of transferable credits) from the responsible Examination Committee chair (through the Examination Office). You can find tips for this on our web page: Tips for Applying for a Certificate of Transferable Credits. The application for the certificate of transferable credits should generally take place at least 6 to 8 weeks before the deadline for applications.
In the event of a change of degree program/subject within TU Dresden, it is not necessary to apply for de-registration from the previous course. Only students who would like to leave the university have to de-register.
BAföG recipients should note that a change of degree program/subject can only be financed under certain conditions. Please inquire about this in good time in advance at the BAföG Office.
International students who require a visa to study in Germany should note that changing your subject means changing the purpose of your stay in terms of residence law. Please contact the Foreigners' Office to find out if this change in the purpose of your stay is possible for you and will be approved.
No, please do not re-register for the previous degree program! You will be asked to pay the semester fee for enrollment in the new degree program separately.
If you are not admitted to the desired restricted-admission degree program (NC), you may re-register for the previous degree program by paying the semester fees, using your student number, even if the official re-registration period has already expired.
The Central Student Information and Counseling Service will help you to find suitable solutions for your individual situation, to consider alternatives, and to plan your next steps.
A change of subject within a teacher training degree program does not affect the standard period of study in this degree program. This means that before changing subjects, students must consider whether the maximum period of study available in the teacher training program in accordance with § 35 para. 4 Act on the Autonomy of Institutions of Higher Education in the Free State of Saxony (SächsHSFG) can still be adhered to in the case of a late change of subject. If you are too far along in your studies, an inability to pass the state examination may be prematurely determined. It is advisable to seek out Student Information and Counselling Services before changing subjects.
