Successful leadership at TU Dresden
Table of contents
Overview
With the “Successful Leadership” program, we would like to support you in your leadership role at TU Dresden as you navigate your day-to-day tasks.
This program is designed for those in leadership positions working in the areas of science, technology, and administration at TU Dresden. Please note all workshops will be held in German.
Program structure
The program comprises the Leadership Skills foundation module, the Leadership crash course, consolidating workshops and advisory programs.
The foundation module is offered annually alternating set groups for professors and for all other supervisors at TU Dresden. To ensure a needs-based approach, the foundation module is offered for those with experience in leadership role as well as those in their first management role.
The foundation module comprises three lectures, covering leadership basics, team development and leadership communication. Participants complete all lectures in a set group. This achieves continuity in learning and supports networking with colleagues. As such, the foundation module also serves to develop and expand active networking within TU Dresden. An introduction to peer advisory schemes encourages the participants to continue their discussion beyond the foundation module.
The leadership crash course is designed especially for supervisors who have no authority to issue instructions to other employees (e.g. Project Leaders) and provides insight into leadership basics.
The consolidating workshops provide application-oriented instruction on concrete leadership topics. You can register for individual workshops as suits your needs. Please note workshops are held in German.

As part of our leadership program, we offer individual or team coaching with external coaches, mediations with third-party mediators, and we also organize peer advisory schemes:
- Individual coaching is an advisory service tailored specifically to your personal goals and needs, which are discussed in a confidential environment where you develop custom solutions with the coach.
- You also have the opportunity to participate in team coaching together with your team. An external coach will support you and your team as you reflect on potentials and opportunities as well as challenges, and plan next steps. A comprehensive needs assessment is conducted in advance so that we can match you with the appropriate coaches.
- Peer advising refers to consultation sessions among colleagues in which specific professional problems are discussed within a predefined structure, and approaches and ideas for solving the problem are discussed . In contrast to informal discussions, the focus in peer advising lies on a targeted and systematic discussion. An introduction to peer advising is part of the Leadership Skills foundation module. We would be happy to organize and support you in managerial peer advising after your participation on the foundation module.
- In mediation, specially trained, independent third-party mediators help you resolve conflicts constructively. They are neutral and support both sides, creating a safe space where each perspective is given equal and appropriate consideration. The objective of mediation is to reach a mutual agreement that meets the needs and interests of all parties and thus allows them to constructively move forward. The process itself is confidential. Occupational Health Services and the Center for Continuing Education have teamed up in an effort to advance conflict management at TU Dresden, creating a pool of mediators who can be requested as needed, in addition to existing services.
We are happy to advise you on issues related to your daily work as a leader and to work with you to develop ideas and measures that you can put into practice. We are here to advise you on qualification opportunities for you and your employees, team development and solving conflicts within your team. In a face-to-face meeting, we will identify which support services are available and which tools could be best suitable for you.
Conditions of participation
The program is open to employees of TU Dresden who either currently hold or will in the future hold leadership positions. You will find the registration forms on the individual program websites in the continuing education catalog.
