Open Topic Tenure Track Professorships
Table of contents
The Open Topic Tenure Track Professorships (OTTP) are a core element of TUD's Institutional Strategy in terms of financial provision and long-term effectiveness.
The Open Topic Professorships Programme is TU Dresden’s entirely innovative way of attracting and keeping the best and most original young scholars from around the world. The appointment procedure did not follow the usual path of a classical application; instead it was based on an active recruitment process. The hunt for applicants took place independently of links to particular disciplines, categories or descriptions of functions ("open topic"). The major factors were solely the potential appointee’s excellence in their field and innovative power they would bring to scientific work at the TU Dresden.
Particular attention focused on outstanding young scientists who already demonstrated an exceptional level of potential in their research work at an early stage of their academic careers.
The Open Topic Professorships lead to a merit-based tenure track proposition after five years.

Selection Procedure
The advertisment for the Open Topic Tenure Track Professorships was published internationally in April 2013 in various printed and online media (e.g. "DIE ZEIT", „Science" and NATURE Online). TU Dresden received more than 1.300 applications from all over the world, thereof 500 applications from abroad.
A selection committee consisting of 12 external top-class members from the scientific community assembled a short list of 26 candidates to be invited to TU Dresden for further evaluation. From mid-October to the beginning of November 2013, each candidate spent a couple of days at TUD for lectures and evaluation talks with the faculties as well as for visits to institutes and external institutions of interest.
At the same time, six external approval certificates per candiate were collected. Those certificates together with references from the faculties formed the basis for the final recommendations by the selection committee.
