General information for the course
Political Science is the science of politics. On the one hand, it strives to understand intellectual engagement with politics in order to criticize, justify, and develop it; on the other hand, it empirically researches politically relevant issues and compares them with each other.
These tasks lead to the differentiation of Political Science into three subfields, which approach their subject matter – politics – in different ways and with different methods: systems theory, in combination with comparative politics, international relations, and political theory and the history of ideas. At the same time, political research and analysis is closely related to political practice. Although Political Science is a relatively young academic discipline, it has a long history dating as far back as the ancient world.
There are four main areas of Political Science: research, teaching, consulting, and the foundations of political participation. These areas are also relevant to the potential careers of political scientists.
Political Science can be studied as a 1st or 2nd major in the Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences degree program.
Study contents
The content of the Political Science major comprises foundation knowledge of political theories, terms and methods in the three subfields of political systems and their comparison, political theory and the history of ideas, and international politics. Students will gain in-depth knowledge of the conceptual, normative, and substantive foundations of politics.
Studies in Political Science provide a nuanced and comparative overview of the range of political actors, processes, structures, and functions of political systems and institutions, at the national, regional, international, and global levels. Students are equipped with the theoretical knowledge and analytical skills to grasp the diverse and often complex relationships among political institutions, civil society, business, the public, and the legal system. It encourages students to engage with socio-politically relevant issues and to get involved themselves.
