VoIP Phones - Hardware Description

The TU Dresden uses until the replacement by softphone two types of devices from the VoIP system family of Cisco. For the normal lab or workplace the Cisco CP-7841 and for the executive-/secretary-environment the Cisco CP-8851. Both types of devices will be explained in detail on this page. There are also additional devices for special applications (such as conferences and operating areas).
Standard Phones
Cisco CP-7841 as standard phone
- Incoming call or voice mail indicator.
- Line and feature buttons. Used to view calls on a line or access features such as Speed Dial.
- Softkeys; offer context-dependent functions for different status of the device.
- Navigation cluster. Used to navigate menus by pressing "up" or "down". The center button is used for accessing the selected menu points.
- - Hold: To put an active call on hold. The participant listens to some on-hold music.
- Transfer: For transfering calls to someone else.
- Conference: To add additional participants to an active call. - - Speakerphone: activates the speaker.
- Headset: to activate the connected headset.
- Mute: deactivates the phone's microphone. - - Voicemail: access the voicemail system.
- Applications: access features like the recent calls list, preferences or accessories.
- Directory: access personal or company contacts. - Volume. Regulates the volume of the speaker/headset/receiver.
- Port for an optional power adapter (not needed normally)
- MAC-Address and serial number (used in case of malfunctioning)
- Slot for the footstand (choose a different setup by plugging in the footstand rotated by 180 degree)
- Ethernet port (from the data outlet) with PoE (Power over Ethernet)
- Ethernet port for the connection to the PC (so that you only need one data outlet for both the PC an the phone)
- AUX: Auxiliary port for optional audio devices
- Port for the receiver
- Port for the headset
executive-/secretary-phones
Cisco CP-8851 as phone for the executive-/secretary-environment
- Incoming call or voice mail indicator.
- Graphic color display for calls, status messages, soft key functions etc.
- Programmable function buttons (mute ringtone and other services), support for the status display by differently colored LEDs
- Function buttons (non-programmable): every button represents one current call function (the function changes depending on the call status - active call, on hold, recent calls list, etc.), the status is supported by colored LEDs.

- Navigation cluster. Used to navigate menus by pressing "up" , "down", "left" or "right". The center button is used for accessing the selected menu points.

- Navigation cluster. Used to navigate menus by pressing "up" or "down". The center button is used for accessing the selected menu points.
- Volume: regulates the volume of the speaker/receiver.
- Number pad for dialing phone numbers or number codes.
- USB-C-Port to adapt Ethernet and power supply (PoE)
- Connector for two additional microphones
- MAC-Address and serial number (used in case of malfunctioning)
