Funding Opportunities on Research-guided Learning and Teaching
Circular Mail by the Vice-Rector Academic Affairs of June 7, 2021
Dear lecturers,
Dear members of staff,
Dear colleagues,
Are you lacking the financial or didactic support to comprehensively integrate current research topics into your teaching?
Do you know students who are interested in conducting research in your areas of expertise, who you would like to support?
As part of the Excellence Strategy “TUD 2028 – Synergy and Beyond”, three programs for the promotion of research-oriented learning and teaching have been launched in 2020 at the Center for Interdisciplinary Learning and Teaching (ZiLL), which I would like to present to you.
With these programs, TU Dresden pursues the goal of recruiting and promoting scientific talent at all career levels and of opening up research paths for students at an early stage.
1. FOSTER – Funds for Student Research
In the FOSTER program, students and lecturers can apply for funding to support research-oriented learning and teaching.
The objective is to make student research at TUD (more) visible and to promote it, while introducing students to research and scientific subjects, strengthening interdisciplinary collaboration, and creating university-wide incentives for student research as part of the recruitment of early-career researchers.
The program is aimed at:
- Students who are enthusiastic about research and
- conduct research projects independently or in research groups,
- organize student research conferences, exhibitions or competitions,
- would like to participate in (inter)national student research competitions and academic conferences.
- Lecturers who develop and implement research-related courses/projects (e.g. Summer schools, projects, tutorials, simulation games) to accompany and support students in their research activities.
Applications for funding of up to €10,000 can be submitted at any time. For project ideas over €10,000, a call for proposals is issued once a year and you can apply until July 15, 2021 (current call for proposals).
Detailed information and application documents
Are you interested in becoming a reviewer for the current call for proposals? Please feel free to contact us by June 15, 2021, if you are interested.

2. Teaching Synergies Program (TSP)
Through the Teaching Synergies Program, (early-career) researchers from the DRESDEN-concept research alliance are systematically integrated into research-oriented teaching at TU Dresden. This is achieved through joint activities with lecturers at TUD (in the form of teaching tandems) and is supported by a qualification program. Thus, the TUD participants design their research-oriented courses alongside colleagues from DDc. Both sides are didactically accompanied and qualified according to their respective prerequisites and needs.
The aim of the program is to create synergies between TU Dresden and DRESDEN-concept partner institutions in teaching and to make it more attractive for students by integrating extramural research.
The program is aimed at:
- Lecturers at TU Dresden who are interested in cooperations with researchers of DRESDEN-concept or who would like to further develop already existing cooperations in the context of joint teaching activities.
- (Early-career) Researchers of DRESDEN-concept who aspire to a career at a university and would like to gain experience and qualifications in university teaching and university didactics.
Alongside support in the creation and qualification of teaching tandems between TU Dresden and DRESDEN-concept, you can receive individual support and coaching throughout the semester in didactic issues related to (research-guided) teaching.
Examples include:
- Powerpoint checks and individual presentation coaching,
- Lecturing coaching and didactic support in relation to specific courses,
- Conducting a Teaching Analysis Poll (TAP) for the qualitative interim evaluation of courses,
- Conception and design of a teaching portfolio for applications,
- Individual (didactic) support of teaching tandems.

3. Teaching Excellence Tracks (TET)
The goal of the program is to integrate content and processes of excellent research (e.g. from Clusters of Excellence, Collaborative Research Centers, DRESDEN-concept partner institutions or DFG-funded projects) in the form of elective modules in so-called Teaching Excellence Tracks in existing or newly established degree programs.
In this way, a research-guided and interdisciplinary range of courses with attractive, internationally compatible teaching-learning methods is developed for students interested in cutting-edge research. These research-focused tracks integrate the (digital) research infrastructures into teaching at TU Dresden.
The program is aimed at:
- Students who aspire to an academic career and are interested in interdisciplinary research.
- Lecturers who offer research-guided courses in order to attract early-career researchers to their fields.
The Teaching Excellence Tracks (TET) are a completely new offer, which is currently in the design phase. They will be developed individually and collaboratively; structures and content will be tailored to the needs of the researchers. Concept ideas and suggestions are always welcome. The opportunities for participation are manifold; they range from the development and implementation of research-guided, teaching-learning methods, to the development of entire research-guided modules; from dedicated committee work to course design for the implementation of the Teaching Excellence Tracks.
