Current information on studying with dyslexia
People with dyslexia face major hurdles, particularly in education, because support and advice is often lacking, prejudices about people with reading and spelling difficulties have taken root in their minds, or recognition in terms of examination modalities is in the dark due to a lack of information. But many universities and other educational institutions in Germany recognise the barriers for dyslexics and support these people.
At Dresden University of Technology, the representatives for students with disabilities and chronic illness advise and support students with dyslexia if problems arise during their studies. In order to be able to assert claims, certificates or statements from one of the following offices are required:
- Doctors for child and youth psychiatry
- Approved child and youth psychotherapists
- Therapists with proven special experience in the fields of dyslexia and learning therapy
- Reading and spelling therapy offices
You can find more information on doctors and medical offices on the pages of the Bundesverband für Legasthenie und Dyskalkulie e.V. (Federal Association for Dyslexia and Dyscalculia) and the certified reading/spelling therapy according to Reuther-Liehr.
As a rule, psychiatrists refuse to test for dyslexia for adults because health insurance companies only finance such LRS diagnostics up to the age of 21. Instead, a diagnosis is made by the public health department, where a fee is charged for the patients. For further information on your individual case, the representatives will be happy to provide you with comprehensive advice.
