Information regarding Studienkolleg
Applicants with a foreign university entrance qualification that does not grant them direct access to university education in Germany pursuant to the qualification comparability regulations of the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs must attend a Preparatory College (Studienkolleg) prior to studying. The required language skills apply regardless of the choice of subject. Certain subjects may have their own discipline-specific admission requirements.
General information about the degree program
The primary goal of the programme is to provide students with the qualifications for a degree in teaching, which is required for teaching at state schools. The course of studies expands on knowledge and understanding of subjects studied as well as of the connection between vocational education and psychology, i.e., about 55% of the curriculum are devoted to two specific disciplines relevant to secondary technical/vocational schools (e.g., an (applied) engineering or social science discipline such as metals and machine technology or health and nursing studies, mathematics, English, German, other Languages or humanities and sciences disciplines), about 45% of the curriculum is devoted to didactics, curriculum and instruction, teaching practice in schools, educational psychology and learning sciences.
The goal is to impart in-depth knowledge of the areas teaching, education, assessment and innovation. Graduates possess instrumental and systemic competences in order to make use of their knowledge in new and non-familiar situations related to the subjects studied and to integrate knowledge and deal with complexities. The course of studies also qualifies for occupational areas related to the branch of study as well as educational and scientific vocational pedagogics.
During their studies students learn how to deal with questions arising in the social sciences and how to make use of appropriate empirical research methods. Additionally, complex connections of the design, the development, the implementation and the management of didactic media/materials in vocational education are taught.
Opportunities for individual specialisation are given by choosing courses from the compulsory optional areas Communication Processes, Theories and Methods of Vocational Education Thinking, Quality Management Systems and Media Research and Vocational Education (cf. “Zeugnis über Modulprüfungen” for subjects). The programme concludes with the “Erste Staatsprüfung”.
