Information regarding Studienkolleg

Applicants with a foreign university entrance qualification that does not grant them direct access to university education in Germany pursuant to the qualification comparability regulations of the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs must attend a Preparatory College (Studienkolleg) prior to studying. Notes on the application process

This degree program participates in the Dialogorientiertes Serviceverfahren (DoSV) – an initiative organized to aid communication between universities and applicants in cases where prospective students apply for multiple degree programs at multiple universities. This means that applicants from Germany and the rest of the EU must have an applicant ID (BID) and an authentication number (BAN) issued to them from Hochschulstart prior to submitting their application to TU Dresden.

The Bachelor's degree program in Business Administration and Economics will teach you the basics of economic analysis and economic thinking. You will gain fundamental insights into topics, problems and methods in business administration and economics. Building on this broad foundation, you can specialize in multiple ways and get to the bottom of economic issues according to your interests - in business administration, economics, both subjects or other related disciplines.

The program leads to the academic degree "Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.)". It is designed for a standard study period of six semesters, with part-time study being possible. The total workload is 180 credit points acquired through modular, course-related examinations.

Study contents

The Bachelor’s degree program in Business Administration and Economics consists of three elements: the compulsory area, providing you with comprehensive basic knowledge of the various sub-disciplines; the subsequent elective area, offering a wide range of specialization options; and the Bachelor's thesis.

The compulsory area (90 credit points) comprises the first three semesters. Here, you will acquire basic knowledge in business administration, economics, and business information systems, as well as mathematics and statistics. Moreover, general qualification modules prepare you for academic work and practical activities.

Starting in the fourth semester, the elective area (80 credit points) offers excellent opportunities to deepen your knowledge and to specialize. You can choose from a wide range of modules in business administration, economics, and other supplementary fields, and combine them very flexibly. With our profiles Accounting and Finance, Learning and Human Resource Management, Management and Marketing, Operations and Logistics Management, Public and International Economics, and Sustainability Management and Energy Economics, you can focus on classic and emerging topics of the field - to the extent you wish. In our program, you enjoy much greater freedom of choice than elsewhere.

In the Bachelor's Thesis (10 credit points), typically due in the sixth semester, you present and analyze an economic problem scientifically. It takes 9 weeks to complete.

Particularities

Quantitative methods such as mathematics and statistics are prominent in business administration and economics. Therefore, a good previous knowledge of mathematics is a significant advantage for study success. You will also be able to acquire this knowledge during your studies. Still, you should be open to familiarizing yourself with quantitative analysis methods.

The same applies to English language skills. Much of the scientific literature you will deal with during your studies is written in English. Reading and understanding this is an essential prerequisite for success during your studies and later on.

For an optimal start to your studies, TU Dresden offers you the essential mathematics contents in a compact and interactive format as online preparation courses. So you can prepare anytime and anywhere at your own pace.

You can check whether you have understood everything in numerous exercises and tests. Our tutors will answer your questions about the course material by email and in the forum. Aiming at students in the 11th and 12th grades and first-year university students, the course is offered in German language and is free to use.

The employment opportunities for Business Administration and Economics graduates are excellent, comprehensive, diverse, and attractive, as is the case with (business) life itself.

With an orientation toward business administration, you can work in all private-sector companies and business-related administration. The spectrum of possible professional fields ranges from project management, organizational and personnel development, marketing and market research, production and logistics, controlling, finance, and accounting to work in management consulting.

An orientation toward economics provides employment opportunities primarily in state institutions, public administration, central and commercial banks, insurance companies, chambers, associations, and large commercial enterprises.

Advanced specialist knowledge, as taught in a Master's degree course, is a great advantage, especially for later managerial positions.
