Dr.rer. techn. Margarete Grützmann
Born: 18.03.1893, in: Dresden
Died: 30.08.1977, in: Munich
Faculty: Mathematics and Physics
Academic title: Dr. rer. techn.
Margarete Grützmann attended secondary school with Miss Anna Nolden in Dresden and passed her Abitur at the Dreikönigschule at Easter 1913. She then studied mathematics and physics for a semester at the University of Freiburg. What she did during the First World War is still unknown. In the winter semester of 1919/20, she transferred to the Technische Hochschule Dresden and in January 1923 registered for the examination for the higher education authority, where she passed the oral examination and the teaching test in February and March 1924. She received the overall grade "with distinction". She became a candidate for the higher education service with a 1st level teaching qualification in pure mathematics, applied mathematics and physics. At the same time, she worked on her dissertation and passed her doctoral examination in 1928. Nothing is known about her further professional career to this day. She probably lived in Bad Reichenhall in the 1950s. She died in Munich on August 30, 1977.
As nothing is known about her further professional career, it is reasonable to assume that, like many women of her generation, she ended her academic career due to family commitments or a more socially prestigious job as a teacher rather than as a scientist. Her biography in this calendar is therefore exemplary of the obstacles and challenges that women faced in academia at the time, and in some cases still face today.
