When Margarete was a child, the family moved to Saxony. Here she attended the elementary schools in Oppach and Schirgiswalde from Easter 1902. Later, the family probably moved to Dresden and Margarete transferred to the III. secondary school in Dresden.

In 1916 she passed the teacher training examination and then taught at the united municipal schools in Sebnitz, at the teacher training seminar in Dresden and at Miss Friedel's private girls' school in Dresden-Blasewitz.
On March 14, 1919, she passed her school-leaving examination at the Oberrealschule Dresden-Johannstadt and enrolled at the General Department of the Dresden University of Technology in the summer semester of 1919 to study mathematics and natural sciences. In February 1923, she passed the examination for the higher education authority. This was followed by her dissertation "On visibility and visual distances in weakly opaque media for which Rayleigh's theory of blue sky light is valid". She received her doctorate on June 22, 1923 and was awarded the title Dr. rer. techn. Her doctorate was followed by further training with Professors Dember, Barkhausen and Saupe. From 1924 to 1927, she enrolled in physics, specializing in X-ray and radiation research. She worked as an assistant at the Institute of Physics under Prof. Dember.
Little is known about her later professional career. In 1938, she worked as a teacher at the Staatl. höhere Mädchenbildungsanstalt in Dresden-Johannstadt.
